"The exhilarating journey of being crowned the 2024 Mr. Gay Nation SA Champion has been nothing short of surreal. For Gert Claassen-Smit, winning this title is more than just recognition; it’s a powerful platform to inspire change and amplify his voice for LGBTQIA+ rights. “The feeling is still so surreal,” Gert shares, reflecting on the moment he earned the title. “It has been something I worked hard on, and having all of your efforts not going unseen means the world to me. This title means that I can use this amazing platform to make my voice heard and be able to make a change in the world.”

 

His motivation to enter the competition was driven by a lifelong dedication to advocacy. “Being an advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights, I was looking for a platform that would give me the ability to speak up and be heard,” Gert explains. “Mr. Gay Nation SA not only gave me that platform, but it also embodies the core values of the pageant.” Gert’s journey has been transformative, introducing him to inspiring people and allowing him to touch countless lives through outreach programs. “My journey so far has been an incredible one. It has changed my life in so many ways—from the people I’ve met to the lives we’ve impacted. The mentors and support have been extraordinary.”

 

Winning wasn’t easy; it took qualities like passion, courage, and deep compassion. These traits guided Gert through the competition and continue to guide his advocacy. “Most definitely, my passion to drive change, my courage to be true to who I am, and compassion for those in need have all been essential,” he says. These qualities form the foundation of his work as a leader and voice for those who cannot speak up for themselves.

 

Since becoming Mr. Gay Nation SA, Gert has been working hard to support LGBTQIA+ rights and representation across South Africa. “I’m utilizing all my platforms, doing outreach programs, and getting involved in discussions in rural communities,” he states, eager to increase awareness and education. “I take every opportunity that is presented to me to get our message across. Using my voice and showing change is possible.”

 

The road has not been free of challenges, though. Growing up LGBTQIA+ has come with personal battles that have shaped Gert’s resilience and commitment. “I’ve faced many challenges, like discrimination, public hatred, and even feeling like an outcast,” Gert recalls. “One of the hardest parts was being abandoned by family due to religious beliefs. The bullying and judgment were indescribable.” Yet, his strength grew from the support of those he calls his “chosen family,” the people who love him for who he truly is. “Surrounding myself with people who truly love and support me, staying true to myself, and educating others as much as possible has helped me overcome these obstacles.”

 

Behind this unwavering strength is his biggest supporter: his husband, Morne Claassen-Smit. “My husband, the love of my life, has been with me for the last 10 years, cheering me on when I feel I can’t do something,” Gert shares. “Having someone who believes in you so much makes you feel like you can truly change the world.” He also credits his friends and family for their continued support, lifting him up throughout his journey.

 

Through his title, Gert hopes to send a message of love and acceptance. “Let love be love. Don’t judge. Educate yourself about the LGBTQIA+ community and be an advocate,” he says passionately. “We just want to exist without judgment. Love is love.” He also acknowledges the mental health struggles within the community, hoping that his message of love and acceptance will inspire more people to be supportive allies.

 

Balancing the responsibilities of his title, career, and personal life can be challenging, but Gert has found that time management and prioritizing his mental health make it possible. “It’s tough sometimes, especially with a demanding job. But time management is key, and I always leave room for my own mental health,” he explains.

 

With a full year ahead as Mr. Gay Nation SA, Gert has ambitious plans. He wants to promote public education on the LGBTQIA+ community, advocate for mental health awareness, and work with nonprofits to support LGBTQIA+ individuals. “I plan to work with organizations like Thato One Big Family, the Vee van Heerden Foundation, and Love Your Nuts, which raises awareness of testicular cancer,” he shares. Gert also wants to establish safe spaces where people in the community, especially those who haven’t come out, can find support and feel accepted.

 

For young LGBTQIA+ individuals dreaming of making a difference, Gert has words of encouragement. “Pageants have evolved beyond beauty. They’re about creating change. If you want to make this world better and stand up for what you believe in, enter a pageant and be the change,” he advises. He’s also observed the growing inclusivity of LGBTQIA+ representation in pageantry over the years, though he acknowledges that there is still work to be done. “I look forward to the day when an openly LGBTQIA+ individual wins one of the biggest pageants in South Africa.”

 

Looking beyond his reign, Gert’s vision includes creating a safe and supportive environment for LGBTQIA+ individuals to live authentically. “I want to create a space where we can simply exist—holding my husband’s hand in public without judgment,” he says. He also hopes to continue growing the Mr. Gay Nation SA brand, opening doors for future contestants, and continuing the fight for change.
